Last jumped the clam and double bear claw in 1984, saw an article in the LA times about people being ticked. What a lousy thing to do.
  • Chuck Molnar USA Aug 17, 2004
Found you through the LA Times article today. I grew up in San Diego, taught SCUBA at the Diving Locker 70's and never saw anyone dive from any of these spots.

    My loss.

Evan, it was a real pleasure to meet you as well. I'm really happy you had a chance to get a jump off of the double bear claw. Isn't the hang time on that a rush? I love it!! I've been to box canyon a couple of times and loved it. That would be great to make another trip out there again. I've heard the best time to go is the beginning of summer when the waterfall is running? You need to keep in touch with me and we will can get a few people for a trip out there. =)

    Continued from last post....

It's no wonder that since they have cracked down on the law, more people have gotten hurt or killed there. The law should be changed so that it's legal to jump in the summer while lifeguards are around. It would be nice to view the life guards as just that, and not the enemy.
  • Will Childers USA Aug 9, 2004
Well Neb, there are a few escape routes, but even if you have them down, there is still the chance that the life guards will be at the place you jumped when you pop your head back through the surface. That's happened to me before. They have a new lifeguard tower at the La Jolla Cove that has been positioned a little further west so that they have a better view of The Clam from there. They also watch The Clam from the main lifeguard tower at the La Jolla Shores. Not to mention the lifeguard boat that sits in between both the Shores and The Cove. Throw into that combination a lifeguard on a jet ski that cruises around and a couple of lifeguards on surfboards that frequently paddle the area...your chances are real good that you will be caught before you have any chance to make an "escape" run. The best thing we can do is to over turn this ridicules law. I've always thought that it's counter intuitive to only jump at The Clam after the lifeguards leave or in the Winter time or at midnight...

Hey, just got back from the la jolla cove/clam. I had the pleasure of meating Will there. And even got to jump the bear claw. After you left though, I did gather up the courage to jump the double bear claw, that was a fantastic jump, one of the best ive had. And then I had a croud watchin and some guy video taped me, that sure was fun. I think I am gonna head down to jump it a few more times and film it. Will, if your ever in the encinitas/carlsbad area, I d be gald to show you the box canyon.

    Hey guys,

I didnt find much info on how I can actually jump. Is it allowed? Do you have to have a license or training or any other goobelty goop? Cliff jumping is on my list of things to do and I will be back in Cali near late July, early august. What are my chances of getting hooked up? Please respond via email.

I enjoyed your website. As a high school teen I jumped off the clam many, many times with the kids from First Presbyterian Church youth group/San Diego, CA. Went back the other day to see it and couldn't really find the spot where we all jumped. Now at 55 years old I still vividly remember the fun we had at the clam.

If there's anybody on the east coast of the USA that wants to go to the most insane cliffjumping spot, come to PA. 2 hours north of Philadelphia is an old rock quarry that has since filled up with water. It's in Bangor, PA. The water is 300 feet deep and safe as long as you know what you're doing. The cliffs range anywhere from 5-116 feet which is one of, if not the, highest cliffs on the east coast safe enough to jump into.

The lower trailhead is in Coyote Canyon north of the small town of Borrego Springs. From Christmas Circle in the center of Borrego Springs drive 0.5mi east on Highway 79 and turn left onto Di Giorgio Road. Then drive due north for 4.8mi to the end of the asphalt. Set the odometer to zero here and continue along the sandy dirt road through the desert garden known as Ocotillo Flats. Shortly after this the road crosses the normally dry First Crossing to the west side of the broad canyon. At 3.8mi you come to the first wet ford of Coyote Creek called Second Crossing where the depth of the water may be up to 18in. If the vehicle is 2WD, then you must park here. If your vehicle is 4WD you should proceed through this ford and continue about another mile to the similar Third Crossing. Just beyond this the road veers sharply west and enters the notorious "Boulder Alley" where it climbs about 400yds up a very rough boulder-strewn draw that will stop all but those willing to risk damage to their ..

i used to live in la jolla back in the 80's, me and my buddies would jump all the time, we always used to go up to cougar canyon, too, we liked the jumps there better, there were bigger jumps, and more medium sized ones, too
