I used to love jumping the clam. I was there a lot in the mid 90's and then again from about 02-04. Lifeguards were threatening us so often we just bailed the spot to be taken over by seagulls and erosion. I still look at DBC sometimes, damn it has gotten small. I don't think I'll be doing that again!
The arch in OB, although much smaller, is still fun sometimes though.

I've done some cliff jumping in my life and man do these cliffs look phenominal. I'd like to see some videos of those spectacular jumps.

We used to drive from Brawley, Ca. just to spend the day jumping, diving, flipping off the clam!(and raising cane with Carl. Larry, John and Larry

On Will's near death experience:..... I've seen this play out here in Santa Cruz at THE COVE too. Cute teenage girls ripped up trying to climb up the barnacles in big surf, pounded by waves and sliding back in again. Without a dam rope, or floater...besides rescue/suicide, what the hell do I do?
A 5/8 Nylon line with a Pitot in the rocks... and a carribeaner on it, for removal when leaving, sure would be nice for safety and faster escapes from the fun police too. Ask at the mountian shop...
Perhaps I should alert my City Counsel with a Governmental Notice of their negligence in failing to provide an escape for humans caught in Ocean turbulence at popular dive spots and scenic overlooks..just issuing tickets is GAY...just a 10 foot chain or line would help.....Cliff Diver's Rule! Unite and Fight! Cliff Diving is not a Crime... Lawsuit the City to replace the PERCH too! Defacing the sacred cliffs should land those City Idiots in the State Pen. They are the criminals defacing your di..

I love the Gifs and photos! I'm 50 and have seen many of the best spots ruined by guverment sissys. In Santa Cruz they just waisted millions on a sissy wading pool (Simpkins swim center) with NO boards! "we might get sued" I dive the peak at Knights Ferry, CA. There is nothing like drilling one like an arrow 15 feet down into the deep cold river!
Woohah! There's a tight pool up past Sonora somewhere called "rainbow pools". I was tranquilized and forgot the way 15 years ago. Whats some other good cliff diving spots? J

A Clam website? How wierd is that when you see you favorite playground from the 60s promoted up to some tourist icon? It does bring up some good memories, I moved away from La Jolla decades ago and cant afford to live there any more. Visiting is a real bummer because of all the F---ing tourists clogging up the place. You guys from the 80s & 90s have no idea what the place was like back then when La Jolla was hard to get to and no one really cared to try. (La Jolla Shores used to only have sand on the beach during the summer.) But the Cave was there to run through, The Clam was there to dive from and Marine Street still kick our asses regularly. Some shit is still great no matter how much time passes!

Will, I dont know if you rember me, we jumped the clam over summer 04'. Me and my friends are gonna make a cj video including box canyon (*california 4 aaw), ponto bridges, and for sure the clam since the double bear claw alone is worth the 45 minute drive, I'd be honroed to fit you in somewhere at the clam or w/e. little over three months till we begin!
-
just happened upon this page, brings back memories, first jumped in summer 74(as a little kid) constantly in late 70's and early 80's.. a bunch of us hung there all the time, jumping, drinking, dashing boll weevil, grabbing beer from ampm, swimming in the cave and rushing up through the cave shop getting chased, and that time lobbing seal bombs into the water when those kooks tried to stop us from pulling the no jumping signs down they put on top of deadmans!! mostly good times, but still remember when brett o. went off thread the needle last time and shattered his ankles, and when that guy from mira mesa jumped goldfish pt and landed squarely on the back of his buddy who was spotting for him and killed the guy !!! also remember that time a bunch of us got slammed against the roof of the cave when the waves were so big they were slamming onto the top of the clam. i still swim the ljrws every year and it still sems wierd that there is no more "rough water drink" !!!

I have jumped the clam and the woman's rock. Back in 1993. I am so happy you have this website it brought back lots of good memories as I don't live in SD any more. Thanks!

Will,Is there a Kayak event this Sunday the 19th of September? Is it at 9:00 ? My daughter and I met you at LaJolla Shores on the 29th of August, Lauren's birthday, where we were kayaking together. Remember Lauren and Lisa?
-
Great, great website, guys! Thanks for the memories. I used to jump from 81-85 when you could jump all day long if you wanted to...
That video of a guy jumping double bear claw was like coming home again - man, that was fun! I never had the guts to Thread the Needle, but I did jump Dead Man's twice. I spent a few years working in the Chart House right above the Clam and had friends that lived in the house right above the Shell Shop (Sunny Jim's Cave). One thing I definitely remember was taking my timid neighbor to the Clam, spending an hour quietly convincing him to at least jump off the Point, and then watching as he took this tiny baby step off the cliff and just BARELY cleared the rocks below and then just BARELY made it back up the cliff. I still have nightmares where I'm explaining to his parents how I killed their son...
Later!

Last jumped the clam and double bear claw in 1984, saw an article in the LA times about people being ticked. What a lousy thing to do.
-
Found you through the LA Times article today. I grew up in San Diego, taught SCUBA at the Diving Locker 70's and never saw anyone dive from any of these spots.
My loss.

Have fun !!!!!

Beginnning is good but its fun up untill end of august. It all depends tho. I am going to make a video of the clam box and ponto bridge. Lemme know when u can go or if u wana meet at clam. evan142002@yahoo.com

Evan, it was a real pleasure to meet you as well. I'm really happy you had a chance to get a jump off of the double bear claw. Isn't the hang time on that a rush? I love it!! I've been to box canyon a couple of times and loved it. That would be great to make another trip out there again. I've heard the best time to go is the beginning of summer when the waterfall is running? You need to keep in touch with me and we will can get a few people for a trip out there. =)

Continued from last post....
It's no wonder that since they have cracked down on the law, more people have gotten hurt or killed there. The law should be changed so that it's legal to jump in the summer while lifeguards are around. It would be nice to view the life guards as just that, and not the enemy.
-
Well Neb, there are a few escape routes, but even if you have them down, there is still the chance that the life guards will be at the place you jumped when you pop your head back through the surface. That's happened to me before. They have a new lifeguard tower at the La Jolla Cove that has been positioned a little further west so that they have a better view of The Clam from there. They also watch The Clam from the main lifeguard tower at the La Jolla Shores. Not to mention the lifeguard boat that sits in between both the Shores and The Cove. Throw into that combination a lifeguard on a jet ski that cruises around and a couple of lifeguards on surfboards that frequently paddle the area...your chances are real good that you will be caught before you have any chance to make an "escape" run. The best thing we can do is to over turn this ridicules law. I've always thought that it's counter intuitive to only jump at The Clam after the lifeguards leave or in the Winter time or at midnight...

Hey, just got back from the la jolla cove/clam. I had the pleasure of meating Will there. And even got to jump the bear claw. After you left though, I did gather up the courage to jump the double bear claw, that was a fantastic jump, one of the best ive had. And then I had a croud watchin and some guy video taped me, that sure was fun. I think I am gonna head down to jump it a few more times and film it. Will, if your ever in the encinitas/carlsbad area, I d be gald to show you the box canyon.
