This is why you don't jump The La Jolla Clam in the middle of winter. After you jump off the only place you can climb up to get out is almost impossible to do. Watch this video and imagine yourself trying to scale this reef. Each time a wave hits the reef, it knocks you off and rolls you into the water. By about the time you get back on the reef and are about half way up again, another wave hits and knocks you off again. This is how 3 people have died at The Clam. After getting knocked down a few times, you have no energy left to even swim. Not to mention that the reef is heavily covered by sharp barnacles which really hurt when you land on them. The only other option opposed to climbing this cliff to get out of the water is to swim over to The Cove. What would you rather do? Keep in mind that the water is freezing too!
